Border Express 2 Day Tours

BORDER EXPRESS TOUR 1 FORT WILLIAM,EILEAN DONAN CASTLE & LOCH NESS (WITH LOTS OF CASTLES)

We’ll cross the Forth road bridge into fife, our first stop is Castle Campbell (also known as Castle Gloom in the Vale of Sorrows) but don’t let that put you off; it’s a beautiful spot at the head of Dollar Glen. This one is not for the unfit as it is a 20 minute walk from the car park up to the castle (we think you will agree that it’s worth it). The Castle was the home of the Earls of Argyll. The oldest part of the castle, the tower, dates back to the 15th century. Its back on the bus or car and we'll head north to our next stop Pitlochry where we'll stop for lunch. We can visit the Edradour Distillery here for a little tasting. We'll stretch our legs at the stunning‘ Pass of Killecrankie ’. Scene of battle 1689 when highland soldiers led by ‘Bonnie’ Dundee defeated the government troops under command of General Hugh Mackay. Nearby is the ‘Soldiers Leap’ named after the Government soldier who jumped for his life after being pursued by the highlanders. People still claim to hear battle noises and see "Redcoat" soldiers here. Ghosts or echoes of the past?

*We head North West to Fort William, which is overlooked by Ben Nevis, at 4406 ft it's Britain's largest mountain. Weather and time permitting we'll take you to the Nevis range Gondola for a trip up into the mountains, photographers and nature enthusiats will love it. The Gondola ride takes 15 minutes each way and we'll take a 20 minute stroll at the top. This will be our last visit of the day and we'll drop you at your chosen accommodation for the night. If the weather is too bad we can take a trip to the Ben Nevis Distillery to see how the "water of life" is made as well as a "wee dram".

DAY 2

*Our first stop this morning is Eilean Donan Castle, that most iconic of Scottish Castles. If you've seen Highlander Film with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert i'm sure you'll recognise it. This site has been inhabited since the 6th century but the first fortified castle wasn’t built until the 13th century. The castle you see today was restored by Lieutenant Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap, he bought the ruined castle in 1911 and it took 20 years of hard work, it was opened to the public in 1932.

*We'll travel East to Drumnadrochit for lunch and a visit to Urquhart Castle and some “Nessie” spotting at Loch Ness. The castle was pivotel in the warring English & Scots and changed hands numerous times. It’s a romantic ruin with the added attraction that you might just catch a glimpse …..

We'll head south now and stop for a time in Glencoe. This infamous glen lies deep in the thoughts of all Scotsmen and it's said that not a creature stir's and no birds sing in remembrance of it's tragic past. Again this will probably be our last stop before we take you back to your chosen drop-off point.

BORDER EXPRESS TOUR 2 LINLITHGOW, STIRLING & THE TROSSACHS

Works commissioned by James I, III, IV, V and VI. The Great Hall and Chapel must be seen, as well as the recently restored fountain. The first mention of Linlithgow as a royal residence is in 1301 when Edward 1st of England took the House and fortified it, the English stayed for over a decade and eventually left in 1314 after their defeat at Bannockburn. James 1st of Scotland started rebuilding in 1425 after a fire in 1424 destroyed the House and much of the town,   His descendents all left their mark in the shape of improvements to the palace over the years.
